Discover the Functions and Benefits of Woven & Nonwoven Geotextiles
One of the many goals of TenCate Geosynthetics is to provide services and create products that benefit the world around us. These products vary in their composition and the way they function, but they all play a vital role in helping preserve our precious environment. Learn about some of our key products, woven and nonwoven geotextiles, and their impact in day-to-day life.
Woven vs. Nonwoven Geotextiles
Woven Geotextiles
These products are formed by interlacing multiple strands of yarns or fibers to create a planar, permeable textile structure. These materials are used with earth, rock, or soil to serve as reinforcement and stabilization of projects and systems. Woven geotextiles are used in infrastructure projects like roadways and railways; they also play a significant part in soil stabilization projects by providing separation and filtration.
Nonwoven Geotextiles
Nonwoven geotextiles are developed by mechanically bonding random fibers together, rather than interweaving strands like in woven textiles. Also permeable, these materials are implemented under airfields, athletic fields, and embankments to assist with soil separation and drainage. They also provide protection to geomembranes in landfill construction.
Woven and Nonwoven Geotextiles in Action
Weare, New Hampshire
Nonwoven textiles were administered on Flanders Memorial Road in Weare, NH to help repair damages caused by drainage issues.Mirafi® H2Ri, a high-strength reinforcement, was placed beneath the road to wick water out of the roadway as well as confine the base materials. Toronto, Ontario
The Bayside Development Project, a $1.1 billion community on Lake Ontario, ran into some issues with weak and unstable surfaces. This monumental project required a stable working platform for their 125-ton drill rig. The TenCate engineering department was able to contribute to this solution by designing a working platform from a series of borehole logs combined with a reinforced slope stability analysis, using Mirafi® HP770PET as the reinforcement geosynthetic.
